Today, I was deeply moved by a soul-stirring song by Canton Jones, ‘Won’t He Do It ‘. Its repetitive and affirming lyrics, particularly the chorus, resonated with me on a profound level, stirring a deep sense of our God’s unwavering power and faithfulness.
Today, our pastor said that miracles point us to God. It had me thinking about the times when obstacles of impossibility landed in my path and how my response was one from the perspective of my powers and capabilities. It seems impossible when we look at impossibilities from our perspectives and capabilities. But if we can lean in faith to shift our focus on the One who can, we can find what we are looking for—the impossible to be done!
There are many stories in the Bible about Jesus’s miracles, making something out of nothing. I want to share one of those stories that captures the essence of focusing on the miracle worker and not the miracle needed and shows the certainty and confidence of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
In Mark chapter 9, we find the story of a father who loved his son very much, and when his son became possessed by a troubling, demonic spirit, the father sought out Jesus, believing that Jesus could heal his son and drive out the evil spirit. The father says to Jesus, “IF you can do anything, take pity on us and help my son.” The father believed Jesus could help his son, but he was not entirely sure he could. Yet he came to Jesus anyway, even in all his doubt, because no one else, including Jesus’s disciples, could help his son.
So Jesus approached healing differently, inviting the father to trust and believe or doubt his son’s healing.
It is Jesus’s response that empowers me, knowing that He is the one with whom I place my complete trust! Jesus, in His wisdom, responds with a question, ‘If you can?!’ He uses the father’s doubt as an opportunity for a choice, declaring, ‘Everything is possible for one who believes!’ Immediately, the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘ I do believe. Help me overcome my disbelief! ‘ In this, we should find that we, too, have hope in all life’s circumstances of impossibilities when we look to and believe in Jesus, who can make a way out of no way for a new day in our lives!
